While I do not collect toy guns, I am interested in Australian made die-cast and ‘A Pope Product’ Diecast Toy Gun caught my attention while I was researching a die-cast toy car that I added to my collection recently.
Update November 2015: I have now added two Aussie Cap Guns to my die-cast collection.
The following images are from my original page about these guns. I am still looking to purchase a Ned Kelly Repeating Cap Pistol or Gun that was another Pope Product.

This small pistol appears to be a cap gun but a single shot load.
This close up of the hand grip shows the trigger mechanism and the AUSSIE imprint in the casting.
I assume the marketing name was something like ‘Aussie’ cap gun.
Thanks to A Little Bit Dusty in Adelaide for the photos of this hand gun.
Searching further and I have found a similar item in a forum entry on gold and metal detecting. The bullet along with it is interesting but I doubt that this was meant to be fired with the cap gun.

This is the same model as the clean one shown above.
And on a similar site, with another round of metal detecting identifying a Pope Ned Kelly repeating cap gun.

Hey guys,
today I found two of these pope Ned Kelly guns in the sand dunes of the Adelaide metro coast. Let me know if anyone is interested
Cheers
Hi Liam
That is a nice find, was that with a metal detector ? You might want to check out other finds at Australian – Metal Detecting – Relic Hunting

Hey I just found a very nice Kelly cap gun in steel box I have been told they are getting very rare
Hi Brendan
The metal box is interesting. The Kelly Cap Guns are not common, and even cap guns are an issue for law enforcement. I’d be keen to understand if the box is just a container for it or something special that the gun came in from Pope when it was made.

Hi
Nice photo of the Ned Kelly gun photo ~ I found that particular Ned Kelly gun in the back yard of a work colleague in Far North QLD ~ Thus the title of my Blog in War Relics.eu ~
But that’s fine ~
I found another Pope Product cap gun last weekend ~ this one is an Aussie ~ it is intact and complete ~ I found this one in a WWII military camp site ~
Can you tell when these two cap guns were produced ~ ~
Thanks
Stuart SS
Hi Stuart
Dating them is challenge, most likely they are 1950’s, South Australian made. I doubt if they were any later than the early 60’s.
Hope this helps
Cheers

I have a Aussie made cap gun by Pope with 4 on one side and 3 on the other, still has a lot of silver paint on it, and works.
Can you tell me what it is worth, please.
Hi Paul
The little Aussie cap gun is probably around $30.00 maybe $50.00 on a good day and dependent on condition.
For insurance in a collection I’d value at $100 as ‘replacement value’ is always a premium, while for selling you need to allow for fees and commissions, so $40 in your pocket would be a good price.
I have bought these as low as $15 (well-loved) and as high as $40 in good condition a few years back.
The 3 & 4 numbers I think are moulding / casting identifiers, one in my display has number 2 on one side and the other side has been a bit damaged where the number is but I think it is ‘1’. These numbers would be used to assist with their quality check if a piece did not cast correctly they could check the relevant mould.
Hope this helps.

It is made in australia
Hello Tony
I recently noted your web site and congratulate the extent and content.
With regards to the ned kelly cap gun I have seen a silver and black model.
Out of interest did you purchase the one on offer to you?

Hi Raymond
Thanks for your interest. No I did not buy the Ned Kelly gun at the time but I am still chasing one.
From what I have seen and adding your note it appears that they did silver, black, and silver with black. I cannot imagine any other colour variants, but who knows what will turn up.
cheers
