As a kid I knew all about the English toy brands of Triang, Scalextric, Matchbox, Corgi Toys and Dinky Toys. My earliest recollections of birthdays and Christmas always included a Matchbox toy, from Mum & Dad, my favourite uncle, or Santa(!).
Later, I graduated to Dinky and Corgi, and to a lesser extent Mattel Hot Wheels in the late 1960’s. However, I was blissfully unaware of the Australian Made toy brands.
I started here with a single page and a single photo gallery of Australian toys but have had to split this into more pages and galleries as my collection grows. The more Australian Made toys I find, the more I am surprised to find yet another obscure (at least to me) brand and range of toys in die-cast or tin plate metal, and plastic.
Micro Models are probably the best known of the 1950’s die-cast cars but there were others, like Hardray and Winna. Brentoy was another early die-cast maker closely related to the Micro Models makers, and Fimcar made some nice die-cast kits.
There were also tin plate toys from Boomaroo & Wyn-Toy.
Weico Models and some other specialists also provide scale models of Australian vehicles that would never be made by the international manufacturers.
Of course, the most prolific of all the Australian Toy makers, at least in pure volume, was Rosenhain and Lippman, the makers of cereal toys based in Port Melbourne.
