  • From Roger Dominiak on Kookaburra Die-cast Model Cars

    Hi Tony

I agree that the Kookaburra models were of very good quality for the time that they were made.

I have a four of the Kookaburra models. For the models that I have, I know the official colours of 3 of them:
KS003 Holden Panel Van EK series in blue. = light Banff Blue
KS001 Holden sedan EK series pink with plum coloured roof = Barrier Coral/Dusk Plum
KS009 Ford Falcon XP sedan – Arctic White
KS004 Ford Falcon XM Futura Hardtop – red

I also have 2 of the Australian Micro Models:
Ford Mainline Utility in red & Holden FC station wagon in grey

      Hi Roger

Thanks for the colour info. I continue to look for Kookaburra models but I think they are held on to by their owners.

      Cheers

    Thanks

    • From Tony on A Pope Product Diecast Toy Guns

      Hi Stuart

Dating them is challenge, most likely they are 1950’s, South Australian made. I doubt if they were any later than the early 60’s.

      Hope this helps
      Cheers

    • From Tony on Streamlux Toys

      Hi Ray

Thats interesting as I would guess that Brent is John Brent from Melbourne in the 1950’s but I do not have enough details on what the made versus what the sold. Many of the 1950’s toys were made without branding as I expect they were then distributed by a range of wholesalers who might package them differently.

      cheers

  • From John on Cereal Toy Premiums

Hi, Shed clean out has revealed some surprises including five small plastic steam engines and carriages, plus a Vampire jet plane, these from memory came from the Weet Bix packages in the mid 1960’s. Can you tell me if they are collectable and have any value at all. Also among the treasures (although my wife calls it junk) is an “AUSSIE” cap gun, again any value in this.

  • From Stephanie Blair on A Collector of Antique Toys

    Hi Tony,
I was delighted to read about L & I Glenn Pty Ltd on your site as I have in my possession 2 Penny Savings banks marked 1949 which I know little about. Recently I have come across a third bank – this one marked 1978.the mold is mostly identical to that of the earlier ones, it has the word ‘cent’ where previously ‘penny’ was used and the image on the opposite side is that of RHR The Queen instead of King George. A southern cross and changes to the text also on this side. The 2 penny banks both have the makers name whereas the newer 1978 bank has none. My question is – were the 2 earlier banks actually first manufactured in 1939 or thereabouts? Or could the mold have been predated to give the toy a more ‘vintage’ look? Also, is the ‘newer’ 1978 bank an Australian product or could it have been manufactured overseas? There is an obvious difference in the plastics with the newer being much lighter and a more modern product. I also wondered at each items retail value as I have not seen these pop up much on selling sites. I will gladly send you photographs on your reply.
    Thanks for reading,
    Kind regards,
    Steph

    • From Tony on A Collector of Antique Toys

      Hi Steph

Thanks for contacting me. The banks are an interesting item and I’d take an educated guess that the older two are genuine although are they plastic or Bakelite? The 1950’s was the era of ‘new’ plastics taking over from Bakelite. As to the question are they original or reproductions? I’d imagine the first two are genuine and the later one could have been made here as the changes to our tariffs which restricted imports and made manufacturing here viable were being decreased but had not been fully removed at that time. Hard to know if it was made here as the lack of brand suggests the mold was generic or even re-used with any previous branding removed. We do know that R&L, the cereal toy makers, sold their dies to a Mexican business in the late 1970’s and they produced many products that returned to Australia in the 1980’s without any indication of where they were made. So my answer is I don’t know without having them in hand. Hope some of this helps.

      cheers
      Tony

  • From Tom on Other Diecast Toys

Hi there, could you please advise why some ‘apparent’ fun ho midget series don’t have the fun ho branding or model# pressed into the underneath? Are these replica fun ho or is it possible that not all were branded? cheers Tom

    • From Tony on Other Diecast Toys

      Hi Tom

Interesting question. I expect that the answer will depend on the model. The earliest Fun-Ho Midget models were made using the dies from Streamlux models which were originally made in Australia. The dies would have had Streamlux somewhere inside the casting, or in the case of the tractor on the rear wheels. If it is one of these models, then the brand may have been removed from the die prior to making them as Fun-Ho models.

The Fun-Ho Museum in Taranaki New Zealand might be able to help further. https://www.funhotoys.co.nz

      cheers
      Tony
